A space to record the oral history of the Old Royal Naval College

The objective of this intervention is to provide a suitable space to record the oral history of the Old Royal Naval College. Capturing conversations with unique perspectives from different people from all backgrounds. This recordings will create a broad and comprehensive tapestry of ideas and experiences that can be very enriching for future listeners.

The proposed aesthetic of the pod is based on a “house inside a house” concept, internally the design resembles a more traditional and comfortable cabin and externally it is based on Dazzle camouflage, which was a family of ship camouflage used extensively in World War I, and to a lesser extent in World War II and afterwards. This artistic reference, combined with a dark, high reflective material of the cabin surface creates a visual illusion of camouflage that is very relevant to the history of the Old Royal Naval College. The modern image of the proposal acts as a counterpoint to the historical buildings, with a very different aesthetic but creating interesting reflections of them at the same time.

The interior of the pod is designed to provide an intimate space to develop interesting conversations. For this, the look and feel of the pod reflects the one from a cosy cabin, with clean lines and minimalistic features. To maximize the use of the space, de design incorporates multiple features that can be folded and hidden away when not in use. The furniture and cupboards are integrated in the design. The table and benches can be folded and stored in the space on the wall to reduce their presence when they are not necessary. In order to facilitate the recordings, the cabin has a very high standard of acoustic insulation. The walls are lined with acousticly insulated materials and the celiling also has been designed to control sound. The pod also includes space for a coffee machine, TV, waste disposal, a small fridge, whiteboard, a heater, various sockets to charge phones or small appliances and plenty of storage space.

Modular Furniture

Our homes and our furniture need to adapt to these to daily changes of use, a living room should be a flexible space for a variety of uses. It should be just as much a yoga studio or home office as it should be space for watching tv

in two simple movements it can easily trans-formed into a private study, meeting pod, or quiet space so that we can embrace a new era of working from home. Inside the pod provides privacy both visually and acoustically from oth-ers, proving the perfect backdrop for conference calls or simply a cocoon to concentrate.

York Terrace West

The proposal aims to enhance the staff facilities and storage capacity of the porters lodge while improving visibility for security personnel. The design approach is reserved and contextually fitting, incorporating modern elements and a cohesive landscaping intervention. The scheme addresses previous planning concerns and offers a sympathetic and subservient solution to the brief.

The proposed design features a large open room with a security desk facing the street, a tea point, office, and storage room. A lighter facade treatment of natural oak louver cladding modernizes the building, extending throughout the island for uniformity. The landscaping scheme integrates the lodge within its context, while the use of prefabricated elements reduces construction duration and disruption to residents.

Sustainable materials, such as natural oak cladding and a green roof, contribute to reducing the project’s carbon footprint and enhancing insulation. The proposed scheme meets the brief by delivering an upgraded facility with improved quality and size, as well as addressing planning concerns. It is designed to be visually appealing, environmentally friendly, and contribute positively to the streetscape.

BBC Radio 4 The Listening Project's Pod

To create an innovative design for a Listening Project pod, for use by the general public to record personal experiences as part of the BBC Radio 4’s The Listening Project in partnership with the British Library.

The ‘Speech Bubble’ is based on a standard trailer size and designed to be fully road-worthy to avoid the necessity for it to be constantly dismantled and re-assembled. It has also been designed as a kit of parts with 30 external and 10 Internal interlocking elements. Each lightweight element is limited to 2M lengths in order to fit comfortably within a standard passenger lift, with the aim for it to be easily assembled or dismantled in under an hour.
The curves of the bubble’s walls are an ideal shape for a recording studio, this combined with use of acoustic fabric panels, perforated ceiling rafts and acoustic furniture the cabin has been specifically designed to achieve the necessary acoustic performance and background noise level.
Inspired by the quotation mark on Radio 4’s brand mark, the architecture of the ‘Speech Bubble’ embodies the brand. The external illuminated polycarbonate screens allow the perfect opportunity to express BBC Radio 4 and the British Library’s brand marks, whereas The Listening Project brand mark has been abstracted into an interactive animated light sculpture on the external skin of the pod.

At the rear of the cabin is a producer’s desk and tea kitchen which can be either screened away or opened up depending on the preference of the users. In the closed position one way mirror panels creates an optical illusion in the small space and allows the producer to discretely monitor the conversations without intruding.

AlInma Bank standalone ATM lobby

AlInma Bank is seeking to implement a standalone ATM lobby. The ATM room would be used in several locations from strips malls
and boulevards. It should be designed to be in line with the Alinma vision and brand. At the same time bright and visually intriguing to capture
customers and passersby alike.

The Design seeks to replicate the retail mall to create an instantly recognisable interactive cube. Youthful, vibrant and energetic, a truly interactive installation.

Eastbourne Beach Hut

The Huts – Eastbourne is an exciting initiative from Eastbourne Borough Council that invited submissions to their competition to find iconic designs for bespoke beach huts to be sited at intervals along the seafront in Devonshire Ward.

The idea for the ‘Spy Glass’ was to build a structure that has all the nostalgia of an original beach hut with a new physical form that would pay homage to the classic beach hut – an iconic symbol of the British seaside.

The Spy Glass is built on a recessed turntable allowing the transparent ‘picture window’ of the hut to be turned like traditional slot binoculars – this can be rotated in a 180-degree direction, to face the sun, seascape or the bright lights of Eastbourne Pier, ‘reacting’ to daily life around it.
At the promenade end of the hut, there is a timber clad entrance door with an overhang formed by the cantilevered daybed inside. This cantilever has 2 port hole windows and an external shower head.

An entry to Eleven's Plastics Worlds Competition

Plastic Worlds

In 2018, 55% of the rubbish in the ocean was either plastic waste or cigarette butts, 65% of which was contributed by the OECD and EAP nations. Ten of the world’s major rivers carry 90% of all plastics to the sea.

The front line of the fight to stop plastics entering the oceans is in the developing world.

20% of the world population still lack access to financial services that could strengthen their economic situation and improve their life conditions. 1% of the population of rich countries owns 99% of the global wealth.

It is the responsibility of the rest of the world to provide the tools for these communities to improve their lives and counter environmental change.

‘Message on a bottle’ is a self-sustaining cause-driven social initiative that promotes/stimulates social progress by offering a solution to a global environmental challenge. An enterprise where governments, global brands, businesses and consumers combine to invest in the micro-economies of river fishing communities in developing countries.

By providing socially funded low cost modular infrastucture to river communities by means of a micro-credit system the enterprise would seek to improve the lives of those in poverty and at the same time address environmental change.

The ‘Lily Pad’ is a low cost heavy duty recycled modular high buoyancy pontoon system which can be used to create a variety of different river infrastructure. It can be used as a simple river fishing platform, a city market, a plastic harvester, a village bridge or communal fishery, etc.  A single module is designed to interlock in numerous flexible different formations and structures and can be adapted to accommodate fishing nets, purification reed beds, solar lights and plastic harvesting devices.

It is a low cost product with the aim that it is provided to the poor communities of developing countries using the micro-credit economic model, with the repayments made by harvesting the plastics themselves.

Dialogues for Japanese Edo Crystal

JaK Studio was commissioned in 2015 by the Embassy of Japan in London and Takehiro Ikeda from Seymour Powell Ltd. to design, produce and install an exhibition booth and stands in the ballroom of the embassy, to host an exhibition of Japanese cut-glass pieces named : Cut-Glass Accents, Dialogues for Japanese Edo Crystal.

The exhibition booth consists in a pentagonal box held at hip level by 5 profiled legs.

The external faces of the pentagon feature informations, images and projected footages while a curtained opening leads inside the installation where are displayed the glass pieces on a continuous shelf. A series of fibre optic cables hanging from the ceiling illuminate directly each artwork which in turn reveal the intricacy of their design by reflecting and refracting the light in multiple ways.

The inside face of the outer panels is clad in mirror so as to infinitely reflect this play of light and give a sense of depth.

To really bring out the best of the Edo Kiriko on display it was important to create an exhibition environment that allowed visitors to get up close to the objects, but at the same time to house them in an space with a strong focus on their interplay with light. We designed a waist height blacked-out booth in the shape of a hexagon – a shape closely associated with traditional Japanese culture. Visitors could walk into the booth four or five at a time. The objects on display in the booth are lit by focused beams of light, ensuring that unadulterated attention is given to the Edo Kiriko, and that each produces the best eye-catching effects with the light.

The exhibition was featured in the Evening Standard’s monthly ‘top 5 things to see’
