Rugby Club, Gloucs

The client, an experienced construction project manager, had acquired a disused garage on a small plot in Brockley, London, and tasked JaK Studio with designing a new home for himself that would optimize the available space and intelligently address the context.

In regard to the use of materials at lower level the external walls are proposed to be of matching ‘london stock’ brickwork to re flect the current building fabric as well as respond to the existing boundary fences of the neighbouring gardens. The choice of materials at higher level is an innovative approach of utilising highly re flective glass speci fically designed to re flect the foilage of the trees flanking the property on the west and east sides as well as the surrounding
lively victorian architecture. Ultimately creating an optical illusions, helping to camo uflage the building’s presence at high level.

With regard to its bulk, scale and size, particular consideration has been given to its suburban surroundings as well as its relationship with the housing on Manor Avenue. The overall height of the building is sensitive to its relationship with the adjacent townhouses without comprimising on a good standard of accommodation as well as providing a positive presence to the streetscape of Geo ffrey Road. The eaves of the second storey rest at 5.5M from pavement level, only 2M above the height of the existing garage. To further reinforce this at ¬first floor level the bulk of the building has been speci¬cally withdrawn from the Geo ffrey Road boundary to respect the existing sightlines, whereas at ground floor level the entrance has been extended to the pavement line to engage with the streetscape.

Soho

Ricky Walters, a top London hair stylist working with the world’s biggest international superstars asked JaK Studio to help redefine his craft, push boundaries and create a disruptive brand experience for his new salon in Soho London, to be opened in November 2017.

SALON 64 reimagines the century-old hair salon experience as a flexible social space where clients can relax, work and meet friends, as well as enjoying premium hair and beauty services. To optimise impact, we created an experimental space that invites constant dialogue with its clients. A third place, equally public and private is energised by ‘the art of conversation’ and delivered on the customers’ terms. The SALON 64 theme is reflected throughout the space in tapestry and prints.

When stepping in, customers face the reception desk and breakfast bar where the salon receptionist welcomes and takes them to their appointed hairdresser. If they are simply walking in, they’ll be asked to wait at the bar enjoying an exclusively produced coffee or a hot chocolate. There is space here to work comfortably while waiting, or if they just want a coffee on the go and a touch up for their make up they can do so at the purposedly built bar by the window shop. Once the hairdresser has come over and get the customer a personalised Salon64 gown, they are led to the hairwashing areas and then back to the main space to sit by one of the Jewellery Boxes, where they can control the light above and have space to charge their phones as well as have a chat if they have friends with them. They can sit comfortably next to them, while enjoying a coffee by the fireplace, whether they are receiving a hair treatment or not. Parties and companies can also hire the space to get their personnel ready before receptions or events, while being offered a full service of beauty and pampering.

Retail Print Centre, Dubai

We were approached by expanding Print Production Company Horizon IMPZ to create a concept for a print production warehouse, showrooms and office building at the entrance to Dubai’s International Media and Production Zone.

Inspired by the iconic Hollywood Sign as a landmark and the idea of bringing words to life, we created giant structural lettering that would support the entrance canopy and form landmark for visitors to the business park.

Retail Bank, Saudi Arabia

The brief was to create an iconic landmark for Saudi’s largest start up bank, that would include a blueprint for the new standalone branches. So the design came to life inspired by the geometry of Islamic architecture and the brand mark, the layout includes an innovative 24/7 street that acts as a social atrium space as well an atm lobby. The skin of the box is an intelligent modular geometric cladding system that is illuminated during the evening.

The project was nominated for a global design award, the first standalone branch was opened in 2010 with 46 branches currently built across the Kingdom.

When start up Alinma Bank approached us back in 2006 to be involved in the embryonic stages of their development it was both an honour and a privilege. Alinma mission’s was to provide total Shariah-compliant financial solutions to sustainably grow and serve our community, and they were keen that this should be reflected in the design of their branded environments.

‘We touched down at King Khalid airport Riyadh several weeks ago early Sunday morning and stepped out into the eastern light. Soft hues of dusty yellows and browns of this sprawling city nestled in the desert sands touched by the rising sun. On the airport road as we ducked under a twisting flyover, my partner Nabil smiled and pointed ahead in the distance. And there it was Alinma Bank’s flagship standalone branch, like a glowing rubix cube on the side of the road. Just as it was imagined back in 2006.

Now architecture is a long hard road, a process full of potholes and bumps, but moments like that make it worthwhile. I stopped to reminisce over all the people who had been involved, I thought of my partner Kenan, Nedzad in the studio, the talents of Ben and the guys at Landor, the unswerving passion of Abdul Hameed at Alinma and wished they could enjoy that early morning moment with me.’

Establish the Old Street Iconic Gateway as a landmark embracing public art and Smart City innovation, to complement the improvements for pedestrians, public transport users and cyclists resulting from the wider transformation scheme of the area.

Old Street Common seeks to be both an engaging social space for the local community and a focal point of London’s creative and tech industries. The multi layered public space seeks to engage the surrounding city, to become as much a green calming lung as an energetic creative art forum.

Sustainability and the environment are at the scheme’s core, it aims to create another green space for the city by stretching the green band from old street into the new peninsula. A series of strategically located planted embankments screen heavy traffic of the surrounding artery roads enabling the pedestrians to take over. Providing clear circulation zones for pedestrians and cyclists alike. The green islands with specifically selected plantations accompanied by air purification pods seek to combat noise and air pollution and create an accessible buffer zone from the surrounding city.
